A tungsten boat is a container made of tungsten metal. It is usually shaped like a boat and is designed to contain or transport materials in a variety of high-temperature applications. Tungsten boats are widely used in vacuum deposition processes such as thermal evaporation and electron beam evaporation, which require precise control of the deposited material.
Tungsten boats are the first choice for vacuum deposition due to their extremely high melting point (3422°C), excellent thermal conductivity, and resistance to thermal shock and chemical corrosion. These properties make tungsten boats ideal for handling and evaporating materials at high temperatures without deforming or reacting with the deposited material.
In the vacuum deposition process, the material to be evaporated is placed inside a tungsten boat and then heated to the desired temperature using resistive heating or electron beam bombardment. When the material reaches the evaporation temperature, it evaporates and forms a thin film on the base material, allowing precise control of the deposition process and the properties of the resulting film.
